Working for myself in a creative industry is incredible and I feel very lucky to do what I love daily, having carved myself a career from it, but my working habits are unfortunately all too dependent on my mood. Sometimes I’m full of ideas and utterly inspired, I can stay awake until 2 am putting posts together and planning content, other times I have no idea what I’m doing, why I’m doing it and feel flat.
When I feel like this, not a lot of work gets done, and I have to hope I get reinspired, and fast! I’m a procrastinator at the best of times but one of the things that help me get back to it are podcasts; Here are some that get me excited for what I do again and help me focus and get back on track.
How to Fail with Elizabeth Day…
I particularly enjoyed the episode with Pandora Sykes (Pandora is co-host of one of my all-time favourite Podcasts the High-Low). She opens up to Elizabeth Day about how she fiercely controls her work/life balance since giving birth to her daughter nine months ago – this is a big downfall of mine- not being particularly productive during the day, so playing catch-up of an evening.
I’m going to take a leaf out of Pandora’s book and be stricter with my time from now on, so that I get maximum work done when working from home, which leaves me my evenings to relax without worrying about an email I forgot to respond to or a post that hasn’t made it onto the blog.
Second Life with Hilary Kerr…
I’m obsessed with this podcast by the co-founder of Who What Wear; Hilary interviews a mix of creative women who have all become successful by trying a new career path. As I haven’t had a traditional route in my career, I love hearing how people have got to where they are in their businesses or jobs.
My favourite episodes- Raissa Gerona (Revolves Chief Brand Officer), Kendra Scott (Designer & CEO), & Eva Chen (Instagram’s Director of Fashion Partnerships).
How I Built This with Guy Raz…
No-nonsense interviews with successful brand founders on how they created their businesses. I love Guy’s interview style; he asks all the questions I want to know the answers to.
Rent the Runway: Jen Hyman, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics: Bobbi Brown, Drybar: Alli Webb & Glossier: Emily Weiss were all an enjoyable listen and insight into what it takes to get to the top in your field and the failure you may encounter along the way.
Girlboss Radio with Sophia Amoruso…
Not only is Sophia’s backstory super interesting (she founded Nasty Gal) she interviews a mix of an inspiring woman like Jen Atkin, Rebecca Minkoff, Tamara Mellon and Sarah Jessica Parker.
She starts right from the beginning and leaves you feeling like you’re listening in on an honest and open conversation.
Drive from The Business of Fashion…
I’ve just got into this podcast series and find it fascinating listening to entrepreneurs from the world of Fashion discussing their route to the top.
The ups and downs and challenges of running your own business in the words of Diane Von Furstenberg, Tom Chapman (Founder of Matches Fashion) and José Neves of Farfetch.
Happy Place by Fearne Cotton…
A super lovely podcast that makes you realise you don’t need to work like you’re planning world domination daily.
But that it’s ok to have off days, days where you want to stay in bed all day and binge watch Netflix series, a real feel-good inspiring listen with fabulous guests like Dawn French, Gary Barlow and Davina McCall-all opening up about mental health and life’s struggles.
